Harvard students will share his legacy as a visionary scientist, a daring naturalist, and a passionate human rights advocate through stories and objects that reflect his professional achievements and travels in the Amazon and Indonesia. On the bicentenary of his birth and in celebration of Earth Day, the Harvard Museum of Natural History will spotlight Wallace’s contributions to our understanding of biodiversity and highlight why they are relevant to science today. Perhaps best remembered today in history of science as the codiscoverer of the principle of natural selection, Wallace also played a prominent role in the antivaccination movement. Wallace (1823–1913) holds a relatively obscure place in the history of science, despite discovering the theory of evolution by natural selection independently of Charles Darwin.
